Most frequently asked questions by our clients
‘‘What is family mediation?’’
Mediation is a type of alternative dispute resolution, whereby an independent trained professional mediator, facilitates a discussion between two or more people. A family mediator is there to help you and your ex-partner or other family member, to reach an agreement on a subject you both currently can’t agree on.
Mediation is self-determined, so although a mediator can facilitate the discussion between you both, the outcome and agreement made, is down to you. They also cannot provide advice or their opinion and will at all times remain impartial. They also keep the focus of the mediation on the best interest of the children (where children are involved).
‘‘How many family mediation sessions will I need to attend’’
It is really hard to estimate how many sessions you will need to attend as it is all dependent on how well you and your ex-partner are communicating together and how you are both engaging in the process. Typically, child arrangement only issues can take 1-3 sessions and finances, or all issues mediation usually takes 2-4 sessions.
‘‘What is shuttle mediation?’’
Unlike joint mediation sessions where ex-partners are in the same room, shuttle mediation is where parties are in separate rooms and the mediator goes from room to room. The duration of shuttle mediation is usually longer than standard sessions as it takes longer for an agreement to be reached.
If you and your ex-partner or family member are unable to be in the same room due to domestic abuse, intimidation etc. then the mediator will be able to discuss with you the option of shuttle mediation, should they deem it as appropriate.
